Best Domain Name Registration

There’s a lot of bad places to register domains online. There’s also good places, but what the best domain name registration place is for you depends on your needs.

To help you out I’m going to list the best domain name registration websites I’ve used or that have been recommended to me by people I trust.

Best Domain Name Registration Sites

GoDaddy has been recommended to me by several people. They are the best domain name registration company if you need cheap domains that work. Be prepared for a lot of upsells though.

eNom has also been recommended to me by trusted sources. They are regarded as more established and is the best domain name registration company for important domains.

Expect prices at least double that of GoDaddy though. Many people keep their most important domains with eNom and the less important domains with a cheap registrar.

Losing your main business domain because of a bankruptcy at the registrar may be the end of your business if you do most of your business online.

Resell.biz is the best domain name registration company if your want really cheap domains as a reseller. I use Resell.biz for all my domains.

The interface is clean, prices are around $6,50/year for a .com but you need to have more than 10 domains to get in here.

NameCheap and NameSecure is best domain name registration sites for low cost domains. I have seen good reviews if these but I have no experience with them myself.

To Your Success,

I was just surfing around the web while waiting on a few domain transfers to finish from some recent sales and discovered your site. Thanks for the info.

You are right the right name is important I now truly believe that so what I’m going to do is take your advice and focus on the right domain name in the near future.

Thanks for the article. I totally agree with you about GoDaddy always upselling! Having said that, they are perfect for my needs. I always go to retailmenot.com to find the latest discount coupon though before I register new domain names.

  5. Wig Geek says:

Thank you good article. True picking a good place to buy domain names is a pain. I hope you give a small guy a try.

  6. Tabea…. Salam kenal. Thanks,-

  7. Leighton says:

    Hi Simon.

I will have to change my domain hosting soon or get my own I should say as I my brother is currently hosting my I domain. I have looked at Go daddy before but I am one of those people who are very wary of the net. It can be so powerful and equally as dodgey. But if you recommend Go Daddy I will use them because I have had nothing but good result’s since getting your newsletter. And this is only the second one.

Your info has been the easiest to follow and you get strait to the point!. I Thankyou once again Simon!.

    Leighton.

  8. Simon Byholm says:

GoDaddy is one of the largest registrars and many of my fellow StomperNetaff members have said they use GoDaddy for most of their domains and have been satisfied. Just watch out for the upsells :)

  9. John says:

Also NetFirms is a good domain register I’m using it from about 5 years.

  10. Yes you are right the name showing type of business is very important. I can give example of my site name i.e. homeo-tel-treat.com which speaks itself for homeopathic on-line treatment. It is successful and attracting customer nicely.

  11. Simon Byholm says:

    Dr. Humtaz

Don’t get too disappointed, but I wouldn’t have been able to guess that your site was about homeopathy online just from the domain name… is the “tel” part something that relates to online in your native language??

If course I’m not a native English speaker so I might be missing something here :)

If I were to make a domain name around the theme I would use a variation on one of these

    HomeopathyOnline.com
    eHomeopathy.com
    HomeopathicTreatment.com
    DrHomeopathic.com
    DrHomeo.com

Those are all taken of course so it’s not easy.

I assume the name you created has a meaning to your customer base, what I think is really not important as long as your customers get it.

    Congratulations to your domain name!

  12. Simon Byholm

Happy to see your comment and want to clarify as under:

    homeo: mean off course homeopath.
tel: means tell or telephone me.
    treat: means off course treatment.

So combined meaning is homeopathic treatment on telephone or distance consultation.

Most of the general public understanding and appreciating this name.

However, thank you for your keen interest in my submission.

  13. Simon Byholm says:

I think my problem is I’m a telecom engineer and I’ve been using the Internet for so long that I don’t associate it with a telephone anymore :) though most people probably do.

  15. Michael says:

Hi Simon kindly visit: http://www.microbilo.com and see if my domain name matches with my business. Kindly help on that. Anyway thanks for your information so far.

  16. Simon Byholm says:

    Hi Michael

This is what I come to think of first when reading out microbilo.com :)

    http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&rlz=1B3GGGL_enFI283FI284&biw=1024&bih=485&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=mikrobil&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=

I’ve grown up speaking Swedish so I’m a bit biased but that’s the way it is, different people make different associations.

Microbilo is easy to remember and looks fairly good written but I don’t see how it would relate to your business (IT), it might become a good brand with some marketing though.

Have you asked your customers how they feel about the domain name?

  17. Eithen says:

Yes GoDaddy is one of the largest registrars and also 1&1

  18. Handy says:

I like newkey21.com ,this domain mean in 21th century what is your improtane.

  19. Hello
I found this article interesting and now I say I am a novice in these things SEO and how to achieve ranking in Google for my site. I have no domain in my website: http://dinheiroaganhar.webnode.pt/
My question is: is it possible some day be able to have my website domain without paid well positioned in the ranking of Google and other search engines too? Portuguese from Portugal and I am sorry for spelling errors, I hope you understand my doubts. Thank you.

  20. Multicover says:

In Australia we now have another great domain hosting provider. CrazyDomains. They are clearly trying to become the Australian version of Godaddy. They have recruited Pamela Anderson to help them with their ad campaign, which is brilliant.

  21. Simon Byholm says:

    Augusto Pascoal:

No I don’t think you will get a domain for free BUT think about this:

When your domain has a good ranking in Google it means you will be making money… so why is it a problem paying a little for domain and hosting?

  22. Venus Cow says:

As a relatively new webmaster your newsletter is great. Your shared insight alligns with our social entrepreneurial business model for a better world in general. The traffic attracts advertisers which in turn pays for the genuinely free service for our visitors. Win win for everyone.

Venus Cow says, “Work at what you love and you never work again.”

  23. lydnas9254 says:

I use GoDaddy and they are great…no problems. As for domain name same as business, probably a great idea. Had I known that when naming my site, it probably could have helped earlier on. Now I am positioned well, and my name is more a less a branding. Next go around, I will probably use the targeted keyword name. Thanks for the info, right on.

  24. mattwood says:

we are all creatures of habit dot com dot co dot net dot org there is an alternative dot ws much more choices left look at me dotboom

  25. Simon Byholm says:

mattwood: You’re right that there’s a lot more choices in the .ws domain but if you’re looking to build a real business the only logical choice is .com. All other options will cost you money in lost customers due to leakage to the .com with the same name and due to word-of-mouth referrals not finding your company in the dot.ws space.

Think about it in terms of selecting the location for a bricks and mortar store. You can rent space for your store real cheap out in a suburb or in some run-down area of the city.

But what does it help your shop to have cheap rent if you customers don’t find you because of the odd location?

Or lets say that you don’t place an add in the yellow pages because it’s too expensive. Instead you put an add in your sons high-school magazine. Nothing wrong with an add in the high-school magazine but if you don’t want to lose business you probably need to be in the yellow pages.

Making up a new orange pages that’s cheaper is nice for some home based businesses and charities that just need some exposure at a low price but if you run a real business you need all the exposure you can get.

    That’s dot com.

A personal, hobby, non-profit or organization website can find some good domain names on .org, .info, .ws as there’s no profit made it usually doesn’t matter if there’s some leakage. People also tend to be more loyal to a hobby or non-profit site and will search it out even if they don’t find it at first.

You can register domain names at godaddy.com (aff link). I think there’s a way you can plug your own domain into your blogspot blog so you don’t have to mova it all somewhere else. At the time of writing the .com domains are $12/year.

  40. Simon Byholm says:

I wouldn’t recommend typosquatting, that is having a domain that is similar to a well known domain to get accidental traffic. If you have a domain name that’s similar to you competitor, you have two problems. You can’t register a company name or trademark based on the domain name, or at least your competitor will be able to challenge them based on that he was first with a similar name. Second, if you ever get successful he will sue you for trademark infringement and that’s no fun. You don’t want to spend time in lawsuits when you have a business to run.

  41. Simon Byholm says:

The main advantage of you own domain is that you “own” it. This is important because your search engine rankings are tied to your domain name, the one that owns the domain name owns the search engine rank. As long as you are operating from blogspot.com you can’t swith to another blog platform without loosing all your search engine rankings. When you operate form your own domain, you can switch platform, to wordpress for example, and just point your domain to the new location. With some good redirecting you will retain the link juice you have built up even though you switch to another platform or provider.

  42. Great article, I looked for the most searched domain in my market and got as close to it as possible. Many Thanks

  47. Joseph says:

Sorry, to add, could you recommend some good email hosting providers that are cheap, reliable and support bulk emailing too? Thank you very much as I appreciate it.

  48. Simon Byholm says:

No I don’t think all domain providers have email… you have to check before you buy.

  49. Simon Byholm says:

I use AWeber. They are not cheap but they sure are reliable. They also have an affiliate program and pay us good money to promote their services :)
